Highlights of the NCBWA's National Player of the Year.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has announced LSU outfielder Chris Stanfield as the inaugural winner of the Tony Gwynn Trophy, in a vote of NCBWA board members, collegiate baseball coaches and media members.

Arizona relief pitcher Tony Pluta has been named the 2025 Stopper of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the organization announced Friday. Pluta becomes the fifth player from the Big 12 Conference to earn this accolade, joining Kansas’ Don Czyz (2006) and Texas’ J. Brent Cox (2005), Chance Ruffin (2010) and Corey Knebel (2011).

Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise, coming off the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and numerous national honors, is the 38th recipient of the 2025 Dick Howser Trophy presented by The Game Headwear.

In the midst of the best season in program history, Murray State head coach Dan Skirka has been named the 2025 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Mike Martin National Coach of the Year.

Three finalists for the inaugural Tony Gwynn Trophy, honoring NCAA baseball student-athletes who exemplify the Gwynn legacy, have been announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The Gwynn Trophy winner will be selected from these finalists, in a vote by NCBWA board members, select college baseball coaches and national media members.

North Carolina gained its first No. 1 ranking this year and becomes the first Atlantic Coast Conference member to top the survey. Previous No. 1 and 2023 NCAA champion LSU is No. 2 ahead of Nos. 3-5 Arkansas, Oregon State and Florida State. No. 1 NCAA Championship seed Vanderbilt dropped from No. 3 to 18 after being upset by Louisville and Wright State in the NCAA Nashville Regional while No. 2 NCAA seed Texas slipped to No. 17 after falling to UTSA in the NCAA Austin Regional.

North Carolina edged ahead of No. 4 Florida State for the third position after a pair of wins in Tallahassee, Florida, last week. Arkansas is No. 5 for the second week in a row.

Grambling State junior outfielder Cameron Hill and Purdue Fort Wayne sophomore infielder Justin Osterhouse were named National Co-Hitters of the Week, while Texas A&M junior left-handed pitcher Justin Lamkin was named National Pitcher of the Week.

The Dick Howser Trophy Committee, in conjunction with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, has revealed the semifinalists for the 2025 Dick Howser Trophy presented by The Game Headwear. This prestigious award in college baseball has been given to the top player based on two rounds of national voting by NCBWA members since 1987.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its NCAA Division II National Players of the Week awards the week ending on May 11, 2025. Colorado Mesa junior outfielder Cameron Cartwright, is the National Hitter of the Week and Northwest Nazarene senior lefty Ernesto Lugo-Canchola is the National Pitcher of the Week. 

The defending national champion Tampa Spartans remain the number one team in this week’s NCBWA top 25 poll, which was released Wednesday afternoon. Tampa received 17 of the 20 first-place votes, earning the top spot for the ninth straight week. The Spartans enter NCAA Tourney play at 43-7 overall.
